SALT LAKE CITY — School may be out for the summer, but there is plenty of work left to do for several former college basketball standouts to make an NBA roster.
Some of them, like Utah’s Kyle Kuzma and Lone Peak High’s Frank Jackson, have a spot solidified on their current team’s roster via the NBA draft. Others, like second-year vets Joel Bolomboy from Weber State and Jakob Poeltl from Utah, are looking to get more playing time that they didn’t receive from their NBA squads during the 2016-17 season.
Here’s a list of where local college basketball players will play their summer ball.
Kyle Kuzma (Utah), Los Angeles Lakers
Kuzma was the Lakers’ second pick in the 2017 draft, joining No. 2 overall selection Lonzo Ball from UCLA. The wing’s spot on the roster is secure, but the 6-foot-9 wing will try to earn playing time as a rookie through playing in the NBA summer league in Las Vegas.
Frank Jackson (Duke/Lone Peak HS), New Orleans Pelicans
Officially, Jackson was the first pick of the second round, but the Pelicans traded up to draft him via Charlotte — so his spot is probably safe.
The 6-foot-4 former Knight is listed as the Pelicans’ only full-time point guard on the roster for the NBA summer league in Las Vegas, so he should see plenty of minutes when play tips off July 7 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Eric Mika (BYU/Lone Peak HS), Miami Heat
Mika left the Cougars after his sophomore season (though fourth year out of high school, thanks to a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy), but he went undrafted. The 6-foot-10 center is set to suit up for Miami in both the Orlando and Las Vegas summer leagues to try to earn a full-time contract.

Jeremy Senglin (Weber State), Brooklyn Nets
Senglin’s path to become the third NBA player from Weber State since 2012 will open with the Nets in Las Vegas. The Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer is also the Big Sky’s all-time leading 3-point shooter, but look for him to play more of the pass-first point-guard role for Brooklyn.
Jalen Moore (Utah State/Sky View HS), Milwaukee Bucks
Moore struggled with injuries during predraft workouts following his senior season with the Aggies, though he did squeeze in a few workouts (notably with Philadelphia). Moore worked out with the Utah Jazz prior to returning for his senior season in Logan, but he was unavailable when the Jazz tried to schedule him in 2017.
Jakob Poeltl (Utah), Toronto Raptors*
Poeltl averaged 3.1 points and 3.1 rebounds for the Raptors during an up-and-down rookie season, so the 7-foot center will have plenty to prove with Toronto’s summer league squad in Las Vegas.
Joel Bolomboy (Weber State), Utah Jazz*
Like Poeltl, Bolomboy also cycled between his NBA team and its D-League affiliate. He played in just 12 games and averaged 4.4 minutes — while being recalled 31 times by the Salt Lake City Stars, where he averaged 16.6 points and 13.3 rebounds.
