SALT LAKE CITY — It was late Saturday night when the Utah football team nearly pulled off a major upset on the road at No. 18 Washington.

But the Utes (5-6) couldn’t finish, and stared blankly as the Huskies kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired.

Kyle Whittingham’s decision to call timeout with 22 seconds remaining is still being debated in circles — both formally and informally — around the Beehive State, and former Utah defensive lineman Christian Cox and BYU linebacker David Nixon are in the Sportsbeat studio to examine the curious case.

Was it the right decision? Hindsight is always 20/20 — but what might Whittingham have been thinking?

They’ll also take a look at Raelon Singleton’s remarkable touchdown, the aggressive onside kick that helped give the Utes a chance at the upset, and how Washington rallied for the win.

Then the breakdown shifts a different direction — toward Provo, where BYU (3-9) lost its worst game of the year (and some might argue the worst of the independence era) with a 16-10 home defeat to UMass on Senior Day at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Joe Critchlow threw four interceptions, took too many sacks, and the Cougars couldn’t find the same run game that they unearthed a week earlier in Las Vegas.

Click the video above for the complete breakdown, as well as extended highlights of the Aggies’ bowl-clinching shutout victory over Hawai’i, and a celebration of FCS football in Utah through playoff bids by Weber State and Southern Utah.
