4-Star Stanford Guard Elijah Crawford Decommits; Does BYU Have a Chance?

IG: iamelijahcrawford

4-star 2024 point Elijah Crawford announced his decommitment from Stanford Wednesday afternoon.

Why is this relevant for BYU? New BYU assistant and former Stanford assistant Brandon Dunson was a big part of Crawford’s commitment to the Cardinal when Dunson was there. With a a new coaching staff in place at Stanford, it was natural for Crawford to explore his options.

A 6-foot-1 point guard, Crawford signed with Stanford back in November as part of the 2023 class. Crawford is rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and 247’s composite rankings. Crawford has publicly stated the admiration he has for Dunson, and Dunson was the lead assistant in his recruitment. In addition to Stanford, Crawford also had offers from Ole Miss, LSU, Georgia, SMU, South Carolina, UCF, Mississippi State, Xavier, and others.

It’s not difficult to see why BYU is an option here. BYU has 5 scholarships to fill and Dunson has a longstanding relationship with Crawford. If Crawford were to commit to BYU, he would be the 7th-highest rated commitment in program history according to 247’s composite rankings.

On the court, Crawford would be able to make an immediate impact if he were to choose BYU. He is a true point guard that could not only be the backup point guard behind Dallin Hall, he could also play alongside Dallin in the backcourt. Kevin Young in the NBA showed that he could play two point guards on the floor simultaneously. Elijah would give BYU another playmaker and give BYU another scoring option that can score off the bounce from the 3-point line or by attacking the basket.

Crawford will have multiple options to choose from, but his relationship with Dunson should give BYU a good chance here.
