Cougar Kickoff Countdown: 6 Days

Less than 150 hours until kickoff!

Gene Sweeney Jr.

Everyone knows that Riley Nelson transferred from Utah State to BYU, but what most people probably don't remember is that #6 James Dye did the same thing after his sophomore year. Dye played receiver (and corner back for one game), but was a kick and punt return specialist in every sense of the word. As a junior in 1995, Dye led the NCAA in punt returns at 21.9 yards. He returned punts for 84 yards against San Diego State and 90 yards against Wyoming, scoring a touchdown each time. As a senior he returned a punt in Logan, Utah against his former school, Utah State, for 79 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against Rice and a 100-yard kickoff return against UTEP, which tied WAC, BYU, and Cougar Stadium records for longest kickoff return. As a senior he also tied the BYU record for most punt returns for touchdowns.
