When there’s smoke there’s fire.

Yesterday, a BYU fan by the name of @BYUsportsnut on Twitter, sent out the following tweet:

Many were confused by this tweet because BYU released their depth chart earlier in the week and both Johnson and Daniel were listed as the starting cornerbacks.

Bronco Mendenhall when asked about Daniel and Johnson’s status for Friday night, Mendenhall responded with, “I would love for both of them to start.” That quote alone seemed like a strange remark when speaking of two players listed atop of the depth chart.

Jeff Call from the Deseret News spoke with BYU officials tonight and confirmed that Daniel and Johnson are in fact suspended for tomorrow night’s opener against UConn.

We will never know what Daniel and Johnson were suspended for, and we don’t need to know. These are college kids. But for those wondering if this is “sock gate” related, rest assured, it is not. This is an honor code situation that ties in with the suspensions of running back Jamaal Williams, nose tackle Marques Johnson, and wide receiver Devon Blackmon.

How does this impact BYU on Friday night? Obviously, it’s a big loss losing your top two cornerbacks. In replace of JJ and Daniel will be Michael Davis, who switched to cornerback from wide receiver during fall camp, and Jordan Preator. Preator has never played a down at the FBS level.

It is expected that Johnson, Daniel, and the other suspended players will be back against Texas next week in Austin.
