In probably the most bizarre story you’re going to hear this week, former BYU and NFL quarterback Max Hall was arrested in Gilbert, Arizona for possession of shoplifted items and cocaine.

According to the Arizona Republic’s report, this is what happened:

"Gilbert police were called to the Best Buy near Loop 202 and Williams Field Road at about 11:30 a.m. Friday where they found Hall in possession of “several stolen items from Best Buy and a nearby Walmart,” according to a Gilbert police spokesman.Police also found a “personal use quantity of cocaine,” according to the spokesman.Officers released Hall following his arrest on suspicion of shoplifting and narcotics possession, police said."

In Hall’s three years as the starter at BYU he finished with the most wins ever by a starting quarterback with 32.

Hall played one season with NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and started three games. One of his starts came in a win against the New Orleans Saints who were the defending Super Bowl champions that season.

As recently as two years ago, Hall was a student assistant to the quarterbacks on BYU’s staff.  Now Hall has been coaching high school football in his home state of Arizona.

Many remember Hall for his post-game comments after a win over rival Utah in 2009 where he dubbed the Utah program as “classless”.  Many Ute fans will want to celebrate the irony behind this story, but no one should celebrate a man’s downfall like this.

Regardless of what school he played college football for, this is a sad story and for Hall’s sake, hopefully he can turn his life around.
