For the second time in three nights, the BYU Cougars lost a heartbreaker at the Maui Invitational on Wednesday, falling 87-85 to Purdue in overtime in the fifth-place game.

Purdue's A.J. Hammons hit a one-handed leaner from about 8 feet out with 1.8 seconds remaining for the game-winner. BYU coach Dave Rose tried to get a timeout after the shot, but his pleas were ignored and Kyle Collinsworth's half-court heave wasn't close.

Hammons' shot came after Collinsworth made two free throws to tie the score at 85-85 with 14.4 seconds remaining. They were Purdue's first points since a tip-in with 2:20 left in overtime.

The Cougars (4-2) had an excellent chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but Tyler Haws' open 17-footer was short at the buzzer. Haws finished with 32 points, and Anson Winder added 18.

Chase Fischer, who made a school-record 10 three-pointers in Tuesday's win over Chaminade was ice cold this time, going 2 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Freshman Vince Edwards led Purdue (5-1) with a career-high 25 points, and Rapheal Davis added 18.

The Cougars were whistled for 30 fouls in the game, and post players Luke Worthington and Nate Austin fouled out, leaving BYU with little size inside to stop Hammons' shot from the low block.

The Cougars started the tournament with a 92-87 double-overtime loss to San Diego State and return to Provo wondering what might have been.

The No. 15 Aztecs met Arizona in the championship game late Wednesday night.

It was an uphill battle almost the entire game for BYU, which fell behind by eight in the first half after an 11-0 Purdue run. The Cougars led 81-80 in regulation after a pair of Haws free throws with 1:12 left, but Hammons tied it by making one of two free throws with 47 seconds left.

An inadvertent whistle after Haws blocked a shot and fed Winder downcourt for an easy layup cost the Cougars points when they were trying to make a run late in the first half. The officials' miscue loomed large when the game went to overtime. —
