BYU Football Recruiting: Trevor Brent Evaluation And Prediction

facebooktwitterreddit

Recruiting season is picking up. High school football seasons are over and recruits are making their commitments known across the country. BYU has a good looking class so far this season but there are still a number of big names with offers that the BYU coaching staff would love to see in Provo. Over the next few weeks, Lawless Republic will take a look at some of the prospects with a BYU offer that have not yet committed. We’ll offer as much insight as we can and make predictions as to what school they will choose. Today, we take a look at West Mesquite High School’s defensive back Trevor Brent.

Trevor Brent embodies everything about the phrase “under the radar.” Hidden in the midst of all of the crazy athletes in the state of Texas is one of the more impressive defensive back prospects that I’ve seen consider BYU in the last few years. He’s only reporting offers from BYU, Boise State and Yale. The fact that Boise State has the confidence to offer him as a defensive back should speak volumes to the potential that Brent has. According to boisestatefootball.com, there are currently six defensive backs from Boise State that are currently playing in the NFL. The Broncos have made a living finding guys like Brent. I don’t know whether he will make it to the NFL or not, but he’s a whole lot more talented than his ratings indicate.

I really like watching his highlights. There are a lot of things that standout. The things that I noticed on nearly every play was the physicality that Brent plays with. Whether he’s lined up in press coverage, making a tackle on a running back or going up against a wide receiver for a jump ball, Brent is physical. He shows a lot of different things on his highlights. He can play physical, bump coverage on the field side and then can play on the boundary side of the field and has the closing speed to jump any route thrown his way. He played some safety in high school and shows the ability to play zone coverage as well. He’s got excellent quickness, finds the ball well and appears to be a pretty sure tackler. Honestly, when I watch his film it astounds me that he’s just a two-star recruit. He reminds me of the way that Jordan Preator played this year and reminds me of Jordan Johnson as a young freshman and sophomore.

Where Does BYU Stand

The good thing for BYU is that Brent is a relatively unknown commodity right now. They are competing against Yale and Boise State. You have to assume that Yale isn’t really a serious contender for Brent’s services leaving the Broncos and the Cougars. It would be hard to turn down a successful program like Boise State, but Brent appears to really like BYU. Say what you will about Nick Howell, but the dude is a really good recruiter of defensive backs and these kids seem to like him. Brent could join Dayan Lake, Zayne Anderson and Khari Vanderbilt as another feather in Howell’s cap.

The biggest factor playing in BYU’s favor for Brent’s services is the fact that he’s planning his official visit the weekend in January with a whole bunch of other recruits. I think this is one of the coolest things that BYU does. Instead of just bringing in one or two recruits at a time, BYU brings in a lot of their class on the same weekend. It allows the team to meet guys that are in the same situation. It allows the non-commits to spend time with the commits and build relationships before signing day. Brent coming on campus is nothing but a good sign for BYU.

Prediction

Boise State is going to be tough. They’re a good program that produces NFL talent in the defensive backfield. However, Brent seems like the kind of guy that is not going to settle in on just one thing about a program. I think he’s going to to focus on academics, the environment surrounding him, the future schedules and the future teammates around him. I think there is so much more than just winning that he will consider. I really like BYU’s chances with Brent. I think his commitment could come sooner rather than later.

My prediction come signing day: BYU.
