The 2017 Countdown to Kickoff continues with 40 days until BYU’s season opener against Portland State. Each day we highlight the player or two that wear that day’s number on their jerseys. Today we celebrate the second of five retired numbers at BYU, #40 in honor of Eldon “The Phantom” Fortie.

1962: Rushed for 1,149 yards and 14 TD in 10 games — second nationally in total rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Voted 10th in Heisman voting.
