BYU football has plenty of talent on the roster. Specifically, the Cougars have a ton of young talent on the roster.

BYU football’s underclassmen talent is special. I don’t remember the last time this kind of young talent was in Provo – and making an impact.

We’ve already covered BYU football’s impact sophomores, which you can check out here.

Now it’s time to look at some impact Cougar freshmen.

Honorable Mentions

Chaz Ah You, S

Ah You was BYU football’s top recruit in the 2017 class, and he committed in the coolest way possible. There’s no doubt about his talent – he shows great instinct and he looks fluid in his coverage. But the Cougar secondary is deep and filled with talent, so Ah You’s opportunities may be limited.

D’Angelo Gunter, DB

Back on Signing Day I said that Gunter reminded me of Eric Rowe – and I still believe it. He’s a big corner that specializes in smothering opposing wide outs in man-to-man. Gunter is fast enough to compete with speedsters, and big enough to cancel out taller receivers. He’ll have to fight for playing time this season, but Gunter is going to become a fan favorite.

AJ Lolohea, DL/LB

Lolohea is an intriguing player. The former Weber State commit is a good athlete that played defensive line and linebacker in high school. He may be in the Cougar pass rush rotation. He’s got great size for an edge rusher (6-foot-3, 230-pounds).

Tariq Buchanan, WR

Fast wide receivers are fun. Buchanan is a fast wide receiver. Therefore, Buchanan will be fun. The Cougars seemingly have a deep WR depth chart, so Buchanan might not have many chances this season, hence his appearance as an honorable mention.
