Sources: BYU Targeting Stanford’s Brandon Dunson as Assistant Coach

X: BMDunson

BYU is working to quickly fill a staff for new head coach Kevin Young. One name that has emerged is Stanford assistant Brandon Dunson, multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told me. BYU is allowed to hire up to 5 assistant coaches.

Dunson has spent the last two seasons as a Stanford assistant, but was not retained by new head coach Kyle Smith. Prior to Stanford, Dunson served as an assistant coach at Denver, (where he was associate head coach), Cal State Fullerton, and Nevada. Prior to that he was at Stanford in a support staff role from 2016-2018 and coached at the NAIA level. Dunson played collegiately at SIU-Edwardsville, Wabash Valley College, Arizona State and Azusa Pacific.

Stanford underachieved on the court, but Dunson was a big part in bringing in a 2023 recruiting class that ranked 32 nationally and included 5-star forward Andrej Stojakovic.

Dunson likely wouldn’t be BYU’s lead assistant, but has good college basketball experience and would give BYU a non-LDS, racial minority on the staff. Dunson is a proven recruiter and has ties along the West Coast.
