Dallin Hall Announces Return to BYU

BYU will have its starting point guard back as Dallin Hall announced he will withdraw from the transfer portal and return to BYU.

A two-year starter for BYU, Hall started 30 games this season, averaging 9 points and 5 assists on 36% shooting from deep. Hall was named All Big 12 Honorable mention and was one of the best distributors in league play; he finished 4th in assists per game and 3rd in Assist/Turnover Ratio. His 12 assists at West Virginia were the most by any Big 12 player in a game. He led BYU in total minutes played and minutes played per game (29.3).

Dallin had interest from multiple schools, including Duke, Virginia, Creighton, Clemson, Cincinnati, Florida, Washington, Utah, Utah State, and others. Sources tell me a member of Kentucky’s coaching staff called Dallin, but Dallin wasn’t interested in going to Kentucky. I’m not sure how serious UK would have pursued Dallin if he did express interest. Dallin also took a visit to Creighton earlier this week.

Dallin is a major win for new coach Kevin Young to keep. Young had multiple conversations with Hall and clearly sees Dallin as part of BYU’s future plans. In a time when continuity is so rare in college basketball, BYU will have a chance to have a four-year starting point guard. Dallin took a big leap from year one to year two, and I expect he’ll take another leap in his second year in the Big 12.

Dallin wasn’t perfect this year, but I was so impressed by what he did year one in the Big 12. BYU’s other primarily ball handler, Ques Glover, transferred from the program in August and Dallin had to shoulder a massive responsibility. Opposing guards hounded him all season, but Dallin still finished with the third best Assist/Turnover ratio in the league. Many fans remember his late game blunders versus his Utah and Iowa State as well as his paltry 64% free throw shooting — and those are legitimate areas Dallin needs to improve — but Dallin was a huge part of BYU’s success. He made multiple clutch shots in BYU’s win at Kansas and was key catalyst in BYU’s win over Iowa State when he scored 11 points and dished out 8 assists versus the most disruptive defense in the nation. All things considered, I think he was BYU’s most valuable player.

I expect a big year for Dallin as a junior. BYU has to replace some pieces, but getting back Richie and now Dallin back ensures this won’t be a rebuild and will allow Kevin Young and staff to reload for another tournament appearance.
