From a conversation that I had with a legit insider...
...the MWC courted TCU quite hard. TCU, for being a small school, demanded a lot of concessions before agreeing to membership, particularly in football scheduling and the other sports (wanted to host championship tournaments in their first year, didn't want to play BYU and Utah on the road in the same season etc.) Thompson bent over with ease to most all of their requests, against the behest of primarily BYU and Utah. Knowing that TCU got what they wanted even when the big fish (BYU) and his little brother (Utah) were against it gave them quite a bit of bravado coming into the league.

It didn't take long for them to establish themselves as the firm 1 or 2 team in the league in football. Armed with arguably the best head coach in the league and with the most talent rich recruiting area in their back yard, they never turned back. So they came into the league like brats, leap-frogged the flagship program of the conference (take your pick of BYU or Utah at that time) and gave us all double birds as they went on to BCS games and subsequently a BCS conference.
