He's free right now to go enroll at any school he so desires. He's even free to
join that school's football team. However, without a release, any school other than BYU cannot offer him a scholarship for this season.

Caveat before I go any further: I have no idea if Chasen has or even plans to ask for a release.

He should not ask BYU for that release, imo. Simply put, he doesn't need it. Even with the scholarship release, he likely still would not be eligible to play this season. So, then what? Does he really need the scholarship money for his freshman year? Nope, dad's got plenty of that.

Asking for the release puts BYU in a bad spot. On the surface, it would make it look like BYU is trying to be petty in not let Anderson go play for his dad. But the truth is, this really isn't a compelling reason to grant a release, something that should only be done sparingly and for very good reasons. If Gary had stayed at USU all through signing day, and if Chasen had signed with USU wanting to play for his dad but then his dad left for Wisconsin, that'd be one thing. That's not what happened. Gary was already at Wisconsin on signing day. Chasen knew where his dad was and chose to sign elsewhere. He had the choice then, and chose otherwise.

Even still, there is no harm done, at least not to Chasen. He did take up a scholarship that could have been offered to someone else, but as far as Chasen is concerned he can still go play for Dad, be on the practice squad for a year while dad picks up the tab, and then go on schollie next year. No harm, no foul.
