to actually do research. The "he won the most championships" argument is a lazy one and that is why so many use it. A lot of the older NBA guys are thinking with their hearts rather than their heads. To many of them, that Celtic era was the Camelot of the NBA. The Celtics were by far the best defensive team, largely because of Russell. They were also unselfish because they had so many good players, who played the right way. Pundits love to call Russell the GOAT because he epitomized team success and in terms of success he dominated Wilt who epitomized individual success.
The problem is that, having a better team doesn't necessarily mean that one is a better player. I had no idea just how limited Russell was offensively until I started reading a lot of articles on him and Wilt. I am not a Celtics or Lakers fan, but I found the whole thing fascinating. Even when confronted with the numbers that I gave you, so many people still refuse to downgrade Russell as their GOAT.
If you are interested, here is a link to some really interesting facts and stats about the best centers of all-time. Read the one about Olajuwon. As a whole, I think that he severly underrated considering that he won two titles without another All-star on his team. He was an elite offensive player, but was also the best defensive player during his time. I found the entire article fascinating, but to me Hakeem's was most impressive considering he played during the era of the center and when you look at his overall game.
