Serious question...
I am a mechanical engineer with experience in heavy industry...but there's not a lot of that here in Utah and I'm weary of the ever-shifting business climate with mass-hiring and mass-layoffs inherent in aerospace. I'd like a little more stability without having to move. As a sales engineer, I have earned a lot of money for companies that I don't own and won't ever have a chance at an equity stake. So now I'd like to do the same for myself.

Over the years I have ventured into various online/programming activities during some of my "off-time." I have helped others design websites (and dashboards) that now generate upwards of $70k/day in sales. I have done things such as e-commerce analysis for large corporations to analyze traffic patterns and optimize setup. I have helped friends who are heavily into either SEO and/or social media marketing with good results (out of 1.5 million communities, they currently have 8 of the top 25 Google+ communities and three of the top 10). I have sold SaaS and done well enough. I have several friends who have started their own businesses (online) and now do over 7 digits in sales annually. I've seen successful efforts, and I've seen miserable failures.

So with that as a background, I am considering starting my own venture...so naturally I am looking around. I've seen a lot of effort being put into some online stores with little-to-no success and I've seen others take off like crazy. But sometimes it's wise to get the perspective of others ("can't see the trees for the forest"). If you were in my shoes and wanted to start...*something*...what would you look at? An Amazon store? Your own website? Align with an SaaS company? Domaining? Social (Youtube, Twitter, Instagram etc.)?

Anyone with any experience here on CB in these fields?
