He describes what I call social inertia
I like that he points out that the US has tremendous mass (i.e. resistance to change). It's one reason I have stopped being so concerned about the politics of this nation. It's like being on the largest diesel locomotive you can imagine at super high speed heading towards something calamitous. As an individual, you can TRY to alter the path or stop the locomotive, but assessing the situation, you realize what a futile effort that really is, so you focus on efforts that you can enact on a few choice individuals (like yourself, your family and others within your general sphere of influence) to either mitigate or avoid the effects of any impending calamity and hope for the best.
