Follow your path. It's not like they chose college after being promised that it was anything but what it is.
Your argument reminds me of the player that signed a contract and them after sucsess wants to renegotiate that contract. It's wrong!!!
You want players to have all of the upside of being profesional along with the safety net that a college scholorships provides to the other 85 people on the team and their 40 walkon teammate. It doesn't work that way. You get either the safety net or the autonomy but you can't do both.
Colleges should be under no obligation to provide a developmental league for players. If it works out, great but it is what it is and they should take advantage of that or play semi pro ball instead
