Defense is more of will than ability. Worrying about how an 18 yr old played defense is a little silly. Even LeBron admitted that he slacked on D when he was young so he could do more on offense.
You can't force the ball in the hoop. How good you become on offense will always be limited. How good you become on defense is much more of a "decision" type of process.
