My neighbor has a child on a mission. They around $5k last year as a "contractor" or non-employee. Filling out the tax on a schedule C shows they must pay $570 in extortion fees federal taxes.   I thought if they earned under $6k, no federal taxes were owed.  Any tips on what I might be doing wrong or how to properly file and avoid the taxes?
