Stockton's assists were an outlier in NBA history
well, Magic and Stockton's assists were. Both of them averaged double digit assists, even when Stockton's final few years he was playing with much fewer minutes do to the leg injuries. Magic had a year where he averaged more than 13 assists a game. Stockton had 5 of those years. Only one other player in NBA history averaged more than 11.7 on a year.

The only one sniffing that career total is Paul at 9.9, but he never had the highs that Magic and Stockton had and if he plays for extended years that number will come down as well, undoubtedly.

There are no other basketball players in NBA history to even come close to the same career totals. Nash, for instance, averaged 8.5 or a career. Kidd averaged 8.7. Rondo is 8.3. Jackson finished at 8.0.

It isn't just that the game is different now than it used to be, which it is. But the game was different in the 80's and 90's than it was before. Those two players were absolutely unique in what they brought to the table in terms of controlling tempo, running a team, having talent, passing, etc.

(I understand in the scheme of things Magic is the better player - so don't get in a fit here. Just remarking at how amazing they both were.
