About 2 months ago I got a call from my wife at work and she was in a panic.
Those that know my wife know that she doesn't panic about anything so it immediately got my heart racing. She had sent my 4 year old out back with his buddy and gave them lunch. 5 minutes later they were both gone. My wife said she started looking for them in the back yard, then front yard, then in the house..... nothing. She jumped in the car and started went around the block.... nothing. She took her search to a 3-4 block radius.... nothing. That's when I got the call. I drove home for work and started searching for 20 minutes and couldn't find them. My heart was in a panic and I literally wanted to throw up. Before too long there was a whole group of people looking but to no avail. After about 10 minutes later someone in the group decided to go door to door of everyone in the ward. Her second house she found both of the boys in an house where nobody was home. Apparently my son and his friend wanted to say Hi to a girl in their church class. When nobody answered they decided to go in and make themselves at home.

Overall, they were gone for about an hour. It was sickening and frightening to me. For about 1 second I wanted to kick him in the butt and tell him if ever did that again he would be grounded forever but when I saw him I just held him in my arms with tears in my eyes. Normally, I don't panic or get nervous but the tone on my wife's voice immediately got me over the edge.

I too, couldn't imagine loosing a child long term. Not much could be worse than that.
