A few possibilities
1) He gets the ball down and scores
2) The other team can take the ball because he must release it.
2) He loses the ball out of the back for a penalty
3) He is tackled, but the ball doesn't touch the ground, known as being held up. No score and the ball is moved out for a 5 meter scrum.
