Would you prefer WHIP or WAR or FIP or another metric?
I can guarantee you that they would still compare favorably regardless of the metric used.
I enjoy advanced stats but at the end of the day a pitchers job is to limit runs, ERA reflects that. Other statistics, such as wins, are useless but I don't put ERA in that category. Is it perfect? No, but no statistic is.
