Warning: Overly optimistic post ahead. Do not read if you don't want to drink the kool-aid.
I see 3 games on our schedule that will clearly be tougher than the others: Texas, UCF, and BSU; all on the road.
The realist in me thinks we can win at least 1 of those and finish the regular season at 10-2. But why couldn't we win all of them and finish 12-0?
I see the games agains Texas and BSU as being very similar. Teams we beat soundly last year that are bringing in new coaches. Playing against them on the road will be tough, but if it really is true that Taysom's passing has improved and the O-line is more consistent why can't the outcome in these games be similar to last year? Texas in particular could struggle because it's in week 2 under a new coach with a new system and they have a questionable QB situation.
UCF will be an interesting game. Yes, BYU has historically struggled playing in the Eastern time zone. Yes, they finished 12-1 last year and beat #6 Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl. Yes, they're returning a lot of starters.
BUT, they're losing their QB and their top RB. Those guys were the cornerstone of their offense; they will be difficult to replace. Losing both of those guys could cause them to take a step back from last year.
Yes, BYU will need a lot of things to go right for them in order to finish the regular season undefeated. The new receivers will need to be as good or better than advertised. Taysom will need to improve his passing accuracy. The O-line will need to be much better. We will need guys on defense to step up and fill the shoes of those that graduated.
But, why not 12-0?
