Why Wouldn't Something Like This Work Longterm?
1. BYU schedules 4 PAC12 teams each year, two at home and two on the road.
2. BYU schedules 4 B12 teams each year, two at home and two on the road.
3. BYU continues to schedule Boise St each year alternating between Provo and Boise.
4. BYU schedules 1 additional P5 conference team from ACC, SEC, or B10 each year.
5. BYU schedules 1 good team from other D1 conferences each year. Teams like SDSU, Nevada, UNLV, Houston, UConn, UCF, etc.
6. BYU schedules 1 lousy patsy team each year.

If BYU is able to establish that kind of a schedule each year, it would be a schedule on par with any team from any of the P5 conferences. It would require a certain level of cooperation especially with the P12 and B12 conferences, but it appears there is value to both sides. They need quality opponents in their OOC games to boost their SOS in hopes of getting into the playoff. And BYU needs games from good opponents from whatever conference they're from, and throughout the season. So far the P12 and B12 seem more willing to do that.

With this kind of a schedule, if BYU were to run the table or even have 1 loss, it would be tough to argue that they don't warrant genuine consideration for a berth in the playoff or a New Year's Day bowl game. In this scenario, BYU continues to leverage their ESPN deal (with this kind of schedule it's nearly certain that ESPN would re-up when the current deal is done, and likely for more money if BYU performs well), BYUtv, and doesn't share the moeny they make with anyone.

Leave other sports in the WCC. Leverage the informal "arrangements" with the B12 and P12 to get a few more BB games, and BYU is set from an overall schedule standpoint. BYU stays independent and thrives. And if the dominoes ever start to fall in a way that shuts out everyone outside of a P5 conference, BYU would be well-positioned to be picked up by the B12 or one of the other conferences.

Where's the downside to this kind of thing?
