I'd research the Shimano gearing and get a bike that has at least one up from Shimano's entry line.

There are lots of decent brands, but you are safest buying a brand that sells at bike shops but isn't the cheap option at the bike shop. You probably can't go wrong with trek, specialized, giant, cannondale, felt, etc.
