At the risk of sounding nerdy, I would describe the band more as geeky.
Nerds are smart, but not necessarily geeky (my supervisor is a nerd but with no hint of geekiness). Geeks are unusually devoted to a single cultural phenomenon, but aren't necessarily smart.
Many of our band geeks are also nerds - but band geeks aren't necessarily nerds.
