I've made the case many times for why BYU desperately needed big men depth last year and does even more this year. I got excited about Nixon's announcement - because even if he learns to be an average D1 Front Man, it's one that we desperately need for depth. Now, I'm starting to get a little excited about this announcement (Korbin) too. But Korbin has to be a smart, fundamentally sound basketball player - not a goon.
With Bronson, we saw him repeatedly go after the body when guys penetrated to the rim, rather than the ball. His fundamentals lacked. He wasn't basketball quick. I was surrounded by Zag fans at the conference tournament, and definitely remember how Kaufusi enraged a typically fairly classy fan base with his physical play. They remembered his body-checking of Olynyk. He was obviously a football player with some size who was playing basketball - because the Cougs needed size underneath. I think the best sports comparison of Kaufusi's game is that he is like a goon in hockey. He wasn't out there stopping them from driving - he was out there sending a message. Then, in the bowl game, I saw him commit two personal fouls on one play - and draw harsh criticism from the ESPN commentator for it. Just not smart football.
I hope Bronson is everything that the coaches think he is. He'll have to play smarter as a linebacker. And Korbin is not Bronson. Reports from someone that Abouo said he was the biggest factor on the floor in summer pickup games is encouraging. All I could find on him was this little clip:

So who sits, if Jake Toolson walks on? Tryouts?
