Apropos of nothing at all...Europa Report

Old movie, I know, but I saw it only recently. Best hard science fiction movie I have ever seen, bar none. Better than 2001, and not just (or primarily) with special effects. 2001 suffered greatly from pretty uninteresting characters (at least the humans), a severe lack of editing, especially in the latter part of the movie, and a pretty much incomprehensible ending. Europa Report was all too comprehensible.

Not that Europa Report was a perfect movie. It suffered from two major problems, a "minor" major problem and a "major" major problem:

(WARNING: SPOILERS) (duh)

  1. "Minor" major problem: The octopi monsters cracking through the surface ice to grab and eat the astronauts. No comprehensible way this behavior could possibly have evolved, even if the mosters could have learned to crack through feet-thick ice to begin with. Why would the monsters ever have evolved or learned such a behavior? The only possibility is to assume these creatures were so intelligent that they could reason out that movement outside the ice might mean food. But why would they ever even be looking up? There would never, ever be food there. Unless they hunt from below and look upward to see their prey against the ice. Which, I suppose, is barely possible. But no, that's weak sauce. Dumb blunder in an otherwise excellently thought-out movie.
  2. "Major" major problem: Really more of a metaproblem. The movie was targeted toward space-loving geeks like myself, and was supposedly designed to increase interest in manned space missions. But it preaches EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE! Six lives were needlessly lost in a space adventure that could have been carried out equally well, or more likely better, by remote operations! And for a WHOOOOOOOLE lot less money! Seriously, the thoughtful moral of this story is, "Never send real, live people to do a job that can be done better and cheaper by machines."

Still, all things considered, it was a great movie. I enjoyed the "found footage" documentary conceit, which in this case was done very well. Solid writing for the most part, tight directing, really great acting, beautiful sets, believable effects. If you're the right kind of geek, this movie will blow your socks off. If you think the pinnacle of SF is Star Trek, maybe not.
