Rose can't kick the can down the road. He has a tough problem - although it's a
great problem to have. Right now, we know he has 16 players for 15 travel spots. Some have rightfully said that he has some serious problems in distributing minutes to a lot of talent this year, and that he should perhaps redshirt a couple of guys. However, a look at his current players/commits & mission plans - confirm that he can't do this. Assuming that Toolson or someone else burns a redshirt this year (Toolson for simplicity, but most say Andrus: http://www.cougarboard.com/board/message.html?id=12697752), what will his scholies and roster look like in upcoming years?

Year Scholies Players Spots
2014-15 13 15 15 (Carry the one)
2015-16 14 15 15 Kaufusi no scholie?
2016-17 14 15 15 Kaufusi no scholie?
2017-18 13 13 15 Kaufusi gets scholie
2018-19 11 11 15 Toolson Sr Year

So, he will only redshirt/greyshirt one player this year.

2015-16: Rose has too many scholie spots by one, two if Kaufusi earns one this year. That tells me he will probably ask Seljaas to serve right away, and even then won't be able to give Kaufusi (or someone else) a scholie. What if Mawien or some other player (not serving) commits? Rose will have to drop a player or (more likely) redshirt the commit.

2016-17: Same scholie deal. What if he did redshirt Mawien? He'd have to drop a player or redshirt someone else. What if Harding or Bailey commit? Hopefully they're mission-bound.

2017-18: Finally some space, but not much. Again, new recruits, JC players, etc could really put a wrench in everything.

2018-19 Already 11 scholies given for 4 and 1/2 years out? Makes it hard to recruit...

I don't envy Rose and this juggling act. At the very least, it shows how jammed his roster is and how something like Toolson returning + Kaufusi switching makes it so much harder to manage.

On the other hand - if Kaufusi turns out to be the player that some are now suggesting, can you imagine the front line in 2016-17 with Mika, Kaufusi, Neilson, Aytes, Hartsock, Davis, Shaw, and Dastrup, with Emery, Haws, Toolson, Chatman, and Bartley at guard?!! Talk about a problem with minutes! Excuse, me I have to wipe off some slober.

This assumes that the following spreadsheet projects the current plan, as it has been revealed, and we believe that Rose will yet reveal many great and important things to BYU basketball:
