Technically not a lot is made up, it's just taken from footnotes and...
other notes Tolkien made to outline what was occuring elsewhere in Middle Earth during the Hobbit. The Hobbit, unlike the Lord of the Rings which was much more encompassing, was a soda straw view of one party of adventureres during a time when much was changing in Middle Earth. Jackson has tried to pull in much of those elements to weave the two franchises more closely together.

As in all movies, there is some artistic license taken to put on film what would be almost impossible to replicate from the printed page, but they have tried to be true to the spirit of all the books and keep the storyline generally pure. Where they have added elements, the elements are designed to at least be plausible.

I am not offended by the additional material as much as the fact that he just hasn't really nailed the movies. The second was far better than the first. I'm hoping the third really serves as an almost worthy bridge to LOTR.
