The dynamic of college football and the Big 12 at the time were a little.....
different. I think BYU wanted to see how all the shuffling of conferences was going to end up. They were also wary of Texas and OU jumping to the PAC 12. I agree though, I got a lot of information from people on another board who were donors to the program and had close ties to people in the AD's office. To a person they all said BYU had an opportunity, but overplayed their hand and the Big 12 moved on.

People since then, including our AD have spun it by saying that an invite was never extended and somehow they think that pulls the wool over everyone's eyes. Sure it wasn't extended, because you were nitpicking and playing like you had leverage when you didn't. I have put it behind me and swallowed the pablum that is BYU independence, but I will never believe that BYU made the right decision back then.

ESPN is great, the exposure is great, the freedom to do what you want with third-tier rights is great, BYU TV is great, but in the end the college football landscape changed and you failed to move with it. Now our coach is groveling in interviews with the Austin Statesman and the rest of the AD's office have to sit back and hope that something shakes loose again with the Big 12. I can't think about it without wondering what were people thinking?
