About 60% are men (thanks to football).

I have read all kinds of advocacy group statement's on players supposed worth but next to nothing from a legit academic journal or source (peer reviewed) that goes into what players are worth. I think there could be some tweaking to the overall system. I think there could be some changes. But I believe a full scale change to the "payments" of college athletes, including making them employees, unionizing players, etc, will destroy college athletics and seriously hurt pro sports, as the vast majority of colleges will get rid of them.
So, of the 517,849 college scholarship athletes, how many do you think provide an intrinsic value to their school above what they get in scholarship, medical, etc costs?
It isn't the lot of them, and it isn't the majority of them. It is a fraction of them. And how do you determine which players get more money and dole that out in a way that is fair and doesn't cause additional problems? And who monitors that?
In short, how many Tim Tebows and Johnny Footballs are going to be there very year?
