Scrimmage observations 7.31
In town for vacation so I stopped in on a basketball scrimmage in the Marriott Center. Really fun to see 11 of the guys play (Chatman and KC sat out, Austin, Andrus, and Fischer not there), plus alums Davies and Plaisted.

None of the below will be a surprise, and take it for what it's worth (which is one man's observations of 75 minutes of pick up ball).

The Seniors (Winder, Halford, Sharp, Haws) - We know what to expect from this group. Nothing notable from yesterday beyond the fact that Haws probably shot 80%. So consistent, so money. Ryan Toolson was there working out as well, and he and Haws had some nice battles (I'd give Haws the edge IMO).

Aytes - Saw what I expect we'll see this year. Bulldozer of a baller with a ripped upper body that attacks and has an array of floaters and finishes. Struggled to finish at times over length (i.e. Neilsen, Davies), and his mid-range shot wasn't falling. Short torso but super long arms that will help him against taller opponents. I agree with other's opinions that he's a likely starter at the 4 by conference play.

Toolson - May be my favorite newcomer, but I'm biased because I love 3 point gunners. Very smooth game, nice shot selection and has his head up (not a tunnel vision gunner, just a long range bomber), and was probably something like 8 for 12 from deep over the course of the day. Hit half of those off the dribble either on a fast break, or off a step back, and drilled a few deep ones. I'd expect he'll find a way to get minutes this year, likely backing up Haws and/or the 2 guard (Fischer/Winder) in short stretches. Just has a pure stroke, which I'm excited about.

Isaac Nielsen - I like what I saw here as well. Definitely skinny, and not really a post presence kind of guy (more like a Nate Austin body type). But he also has a very fundamentally sound, smooth stroke that extends to 3 point range. I think he could potentially be a Steve Novak type player (not NBA level, just saying in style), who was great for Marquette. Maybe even Chris Bosh-like (Bosh of this past year, hanging more around the perimeter knocking down shots). He is really long and is constant disruption on defense (blocks, deflections). Plays hard like Austin, but without the frenetic-elbows-flailing feel to his game. Much smoother. Doesn't seem to have much bounce, but a 6'11" guy with skills and length will find his way into minutes as well. He guarded the 4 at times (Aytes) and seems to move his feet decently well, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him get time there.

Frank Bartley -- As others have reported, spent his time at PG. Seems to be looking for his shot a bit more, and looks about like he did last year (athletic, bouncy, not always fully in control, flashes of nice playmaking).

Corbin Kafusi -- I can see what the hype is about because he's a big body, probably our largest physical specimen since Chris Miles. In fact, that's how I would envision him fitting in this year (a Miles type role). Strong defender and rebounder, not a particularly strong set of offensive skills but able to catch and finish. I think he was 4 for 4 on the afternoon with a dunk, pick-n-roll layup finish, a 10 footer, and a hook shot. Expectations should be tempered given he's raw and fresh off the mission, but I'm super excited we have him on the roster this year.

Luke Worthington -- Actually looks a bit small next to Kafusi, but I think he's developing nicely if one day is any indication. Had a handful of nice post moves (lefty and righty hook shots), sealed well for a catch and finish, hit a big fast break dunk, and provided his typical rebounding presence. Definitely looked better than last year.

Dalton Nixon -- Will give the benefit of the doubt that he just had an off day (don't we all), but wouldn't be terribly surprised if he winds up as a redshirt given the combo of Kafusi, Nielsen, Worthington, and Austin could hold down the 4/5 minutes until Aytes arrives as the 5th guy rotating in.

Austin Nelson, Jaren Sweeney -- Solid practice squad guys (would normally be walk ons). Nelson in particular was hitting from 3 and is a good ballhandler/distributor. Nice guys to have as #17 and #18 on the roster. We also have Kyle Davis (USU transfer), Andrew Johnston (#13 last year), and Jordan Ellis as practice squad guys, so we'll be deep every day.

Again, take it for what it's worth. But if KC comes back healthy, I'm confident that we'll find enough strong contributors amongst the 16 eligible guys to find a solid 8-10 man rotation. And Haws looks primed for a superstar year.
