This had nothing to do with etiquette. Giving up is never the "proper" thing to
do in such a scenario (just like you don't "let" a QB complete a pass in garbage time to set some passing record and you don't "let" an opposing basketball player get a free assist to allow him to secure a triple double).

Letting the opposing pitcher strike you out offends all notions of competition and diminishes the feat.

Also, one thing that differentiates baseball from other sports is that baseball has no clock. You maybe down 10-0 with 2 outs in the 9th inning, but you theoretically still have a chance because you can go on a massive two out rally.

Frankly, I'm ok with the batter doing anything he can to break up the no hitter, including laying down a bunt if he wants to.
