I was watching that game, fairly confident we were about to pull off the upset win, with a good friend in my living room in Louisiana. The game had been a blast--Payne's big hits and the deep balls to Collie and Watkins. The unlikely comeback victory seemed apparent.
I won't tell you the simile my friend used to describe the look on my face when the field goal attempt sailed wide. One of the great BYU games of the post-Lavell era was there for the taking but wasn't to be....
I'll be on the 2nd row, near the 50, smack in the middle of BSU boosters for this year's contest; again, I'll have an out of state friend with me. After two near misses, I'm hoping (and betting with my ticket $$$) that this is the year that the ghosts of Payne are exorcised and we get over the hump in Boise.
