I am completely serious. If these families have truly streamlined and cut their
expenses and can't make it, then I understand the need for two incomes.

I think a great deal of the increase in the cost of living can be directly linked to an actual change in what people consider necessary.

Most people could get by just fine without an expensive cellphone plan, no home internet service, and either no TV or just over-the air television. Most families could get by in a more affordable home and could do with either fewer cars or older cars. Maybe it means working out on your own instead of paying $150/month to work out at a Crossfit gym.

I remember reading an article in USAToday about a family in San Antonio that was choosing not to pay their medical bills, but had two car payments and a $250,000 mortgage. If you can't cover your bills you probably ought to downsize.

Many of life's necessities simply aren't and it is a question of priorities.
