It shouldn't be a controversial position to state that most people *can* get by
without expensive cell phone plans, cable TV, expensive gym memberships, large houses, etc. I mean, what does anyone really "need?" My dad grew up with six siblings in a 1400 square foot, 3-bedroom house. The idea that we "need" much beyond that is absurd. I agree that if people truly want to, they can probably get by on one income, even with kids. But most people aren't willing to voluntarily lower their standard of living.
