A few observations re: responses to the "Keeping up with Joneses"
There seems to be some really interesting camps that people fall into here on CB on their perspective on TH comments regarding P5 autonomy and stipends.

1st camp: "BYU never intended to keep up with the Joneses" and anyone who thought otherwise are foolish to have thought so. This camp refers to Church organization and structure and makes a stand on the careful methodical process of Church budgeting.

2nd camp: "TH comments have been taken out of context and misunderstood." He really is saying BYU will do anything within the realm of rational thought to keep BYU competitive and running toe to toe with the P5 conferences. Of course BYU is going to keep up with the P5's in everything that matters.

3rd camp: "BYU is BYU and they are going to be fine doing what we have always done to be successful. We don't need to match stipends and its not worth getting your panties in a wad and acting like a total nancy over the issue. Plus, it isn't even a real issue at this point." (BTW, I personally can't stand that "nancy" bit here on CB... my two cents)

4th camp: (Related to the 1st camp) "BYU is not going to follow P5 Babylon into excessive spending, riotous living, subsidizing condoms, setting up a dating service, and setting up shop on the great and spacious building all in the name of college football.... and, of course, TH knows the P5 schools are thinking those very things and certainly BYU isn't going that far."

I know these classifications are exaggerated.... a little.

But, it has been quite interesting how these diametrically opposed opinions are expressed and argued over the last day. Fine entertainment, if you ask me.
