It's amazing that BYU ever won a NC from the WAC
It would be very, very difficult to do so outside the P5. Pitt won it in 1976 as an Indy, and they are now an ACC school.
In fact, the last AP NCAA football champion who is not in a P5 conference would be Army in 1945.* BYU has the sad distinction of being a fairly recent NC without being invited to a real conference.
*Notre Dame has been specially favored since the BCS began and is mostly in the ACC now.
