I think teams develop identities which for the most part define who they are.
Look at the defense for example. They've stepped on the field for the past four or five seasons and played like they were one of the best in the country. They simply re-tool every year and don't seem to miss a step. This mentality was built on the backs of Bronco, Kehl, Nixon, Van Noy, Ziggy, etc.

Subsequently our offense steps on the field and looks lost and rudderless. They seem unsure of their abilities and as a result make mistakes and don't convert. This mentality was built on the backs of Doman, Heaps, and Riley. We need some new break out players to step up and create a new mentality on offense.

This is why it is so hard to take a traditionally bad team and make them good. Too many were a part of the losing and don't know what it's like to win. Hopefully this is the year where our O learns to dominate again.
