I don't care what race these guys are. They made a mistake and they're paying the price. From the time you start coaching young football players you teach them that this is a game that requires tremendous discipline, and that it's a privilege to play.
Add the honor code into the mix and you've got a unique set of rules that must be abided by, and a higher level of discipline. But if we start removing consequences because someone isn't a member of the church or because it will make recruiting minorities more challenging, then we've damaged not only what makes BYU unique, but also what makes football in the lives of young men so great.
Yes, for fans it's unfortunate that some players, who by all accounts are good kids, made some mistakes, but I'm glad as a collective team we have enough character to do the right thing even when it may hurt our chances of winning.
Fortunately the conventional wisdom is we'll still handle UConn with little problem, but even if we lose we'll have done the right thing, and as message board fans we'll have the perfect built in excuse.
Doesn't hurt that none of these guys will suffer a season-ending injury in the opener either.
