What's the point of enjoying football as a diversion if you aren't optimistic?

Are you into self-flagellation? or is your livelihood contingent on byu winning? What's the point of being pessimistic in a pursuit of diversion? Desire to be smartest guy in the room if things go south?

I've never, ever understood this mentality.
