College football is and always has been uncommonly ridiculous when it comes to crowning its champion. I can't think of any other sports league like it. In high school, you have your region and then the state playoffs. The NFL has its divisions. You win more games than your divisional foes and you're in. In NCAA basketball, win your league and you're in. There's got to be a better way in college rather than these subjective polls and the bowl games. Even the new system is ripe for corruption: 13 filled people in a smoke-filled room . . . hmmm what could possibly go wrong? Why not just have 8 leagues and have the league champion get an autobid? Or 6 leagues with two at-large teams? Or why not follow the World Cup model and have pool play followed by a big national tournament? Or why not follow the Champion's League model? There are lots of ways to settle it on the field. While this year's change is a step in the right direction, college football is still insane for the way that it crowns its champion.
