I do not understand the relationship between HC & Athlete at BYU
My perception over years of observing the HC Office is the punishment all too often does not fit the crime. I am less critical of the head coaches in this regard, but I'm left wondering about Bronco on this one in particular. Granted, I do not have a full understanding of the details, but I'm confident I have a good idea of what occurred.

In general, however, the punishments doled out by the HC office and head coaches at BYU seem too harsh compared to what I personally witnessed regular students doing and getting away with when I was a student at the Y. Comparatively, athletes' punishments are too heavy handed.

The honor code needs to be updated for the times. Regardless of what you believe about its enforcement, it is out of touch with reality. 1960 is a long time past. Certain elements of the honor code simply need to get updated or removed.

The honor code should be in complete harmony with temple worship. If a person can go to the temple but not be allowed into the testing center, then in my opinion there is something amiss with the code.

LDS doctrine also includes warnings for those who sin against the greater light. D&C 82:3 would logically dictate, therefore, (if it is to be believed literally), that non-LDS students should be granted more leeway. If the HC Office takes a one-size-fits-all approach they have already failed our new friends from the start.

More than anything, I'm really, really, sad for JJ. I don't know how he'll get over this one. It's a bitter pill to swallow. I hope BYU shows him greater love for the rest of the year. I hope BYU fans everywhere rally around him and really make him feel appreciated. Same goes for every athlete having to forego a game this week. We owe it to them for the leap of faith they took in this fine program to show them how much we really do care.
