Why Not--Another Game Report From Rentschler Field
Killing time before meeting the rest of the crew for a jog around Gettysburgh (#tripbrag), and I thought I'd offer a few observations from the game.

It's kinda nice wearing essentially the same colors as the opposition. We arrived very early for the BYU tailgate party and bought some additional swag, which I had to return to the car pre-game. Frat row had literally sprung up on all sides of us when I returned. UConn folks 1) couldn't tell we were opposing fans unless we were right in front of them and 2) were pretty cool. Not all that eager to engage, but didn't encounter jerks either. Great, expansive tailgating scene. I think it's the main attraction for the football games.

Stadium is pleasant enough. Got much fuller than I'd been expecting, but I looked up at some point in the second half and the UConn students were outta there. Football may not even come 5th in that town. Saw some obvious basketball players and folks wearing UConn basketball gear....

Kaufusi gets to play to his strength as an outside rusher. We'll miss Van Noy's speed, but Bronson is a physical menace to block one on one on the edge. Not sure how the rest of his game will fare, but he'll be good in that role.

Not sure how long we'll miss Van Noy's speed. Fred Warner showed obvious quicks in the only play we saw him, almost blocking a punt. Future looks bright for that one.

Not the push we're used to from the DL. Hoping Marques comes back better than ever. With added size and maturity, who knows how good these guys can get, but on Friday, we weren't in the backfield as much.

Davis gets a bit out of position but is never really out of the play and has obvious closing speed--he's lightening once he sets his course and runs to the play. How loose his hips are and how we'll he'll perfect his technique are interesting questions, but the guy played great for being thrown back into the mix against UConn's best player (that I noticed) and has obvious talents. Nice work.

Preator in great position every time I looked.

Receivers often not open, particularly Leslie, which didn't assuage one of my concerns (echoed recently by Doman)--that the passing game may be too elementary. The initial timing routes and getting the ball out quickly/decisively/accurately appeared the one thing on which to pick in Taysom's masterful game. Guys did get open quickly at times, but the read alluded us. Most of the time we were still able to make plays after Taysom bought time. May not work against Texas/UCF.

Very encouraging was the fact that we seemed to catch and correct this. After Houk/Juergens had been running open early a couple times, Hill dialed them up very nicely.

Backs out of the backfield and Hill's ability to find them was very good addition. The improved O Line gets credit here.

Fun game and an enthusiastic BYU contingent. Now let's get the Longhorns.
