I watched the game on Youtube last night, and I had a different impression

of the team than what seems to be the overall exuberance from the board.

These are my thoughts after watching it:

Pros:
  • Taysom is more accurate and makes much better decisions
  • The offensive line is improved and generally provides great protection for Taysom
  • The receivers did a great job on hauling in catches
  • The defensive line generally did a good job on the line, but would have liked to have seen more hits in the backfield on the RBs.
  • Even with some starters missing, it is clear this team has good depth Lack of 3-and-outs (I don't think we had a single one)

Cons:

  • Penalties, penalties, penalties - killed the offense on a couple of drives
  • The offense looked good, not great. Honestly expected more against UConn. FSU, Alabama, LSU, etc. would have dropped 60 points on UConn. Penalties probably cost us 7-10 points, though.
  • Kicking game needs work
  • Dropped balls by UConn receivers made us look better in the secondary than I think we really are. I think a more accurate QB and a dangerous WR can hurt us with the deep ball.
  • Didn't feel like we were good at getting pressure in the backfield. This is a minor critique, the DLine played very well, but it seemed like first contact was always at or after the line of scrimmage. With UConn's OLine, I would have expected us to get into the backfield more. Perhaps those more familiar with schemes will inform me that we weren't trying to do that.
  • Lack of killer mentality. We still don't have that 'step-on-their-throat' mentality, and I think it is going to cost us at some point if we don't turn it around. This game should have been like the 49-0 game, but it felt like we took our foot off the gas early and then struggled after that. UConn put together some nice drives and basically looked our equal the entire second half. I don't know if this is more on the coaches or the players, but if this team wants to go undefeated, they need to want to score 60 points every game and not let off until they do.
