Are you talking in the religious sense or the dictionary?
On the religious front, I think it's clear where we get direction on the attributes of being self-righteous. Those who teach us about those attributes have authority to judge who is and who isn't self righteous. You'll notice my post said "is likely" which refers to some exceptions when those in authority have rightfully labelled people as self-righteous.

On the dictionary side, you can look up the authors of Websters, etc.
