Speed and Athleticism
Route running is easily coached;

You could have 10 kids who run great routes, are always where the QB expects them to be, but if they can never get separation from defenders, or get open, then it won't matter much.

When I have coached, I always play my best players; if I have two players who are just head and tails more athletic than other kids, I move them positions to make sure they are on the field, period.

Bronco tried to not play KVN his freshman year, and he continually was asked why he kept playing his "gritty, RS Senior/RM Junior" over KVN when clearly KVN was more athletic, more talented etc. I think that was when Bronco started turning the corner on not looking at how old kids were, whether they were RMs or true freshman, but he started evaluating kids based on talent.

As coaches, we always love the "try-hard" kid, the kid with little talent, but that gives 110% every play because we wish our talented athletic, physically gifted kids would have the same work ethic; but there is a reason why Calvin Johnson is the best WR in the NFL;
